The types of diet most likely to limit physiological performance through mineral or vitamin inadequacy under practical conditions are considered. The effects of dietary imbalance, particularly of calcium, magnesium and copper, are discussed and limitations to present knowledge of vitamin and mineral requirements of stock are described. It is strongly emphasised that before more precise information of nutrient requirements can be obtained or exploited there is a need for greater knowledge of the mineral and vitamin content of common British feeding stuffs.
