Colloidal silica will peptise Fe 2 O 3 in alkaline media containing Na ions, but Ca ions cause flocculation of the silica and no peptisation of Fe 2 O 2 occurs. It is concluded that the theory of Reifenberg on the formation of terra rossa on limestone is untenable.
