The responses to phosphorus of swede and rape for ‘standard’ and newly reclaimed upland soils in Northern England are given. The additional phosphate required on very phosphorus‐deficient soils over ‘standard’ conditions was higher than is suggested elsewhere. Superphosphate was consistently more efficient than other phosphatic fertilisers with which it was compared. Soil temperature is suggested as an important factor influencing the effectiveness of mineral phosphates.
