Determinations of the productive energy of poultry rations by the algebraic method of Fraps gave highly variable results which were 10–40% below values predicted from tables of energy production coefficients. Highly variable and low results were obtained whether groups or individual chicks were used for the determination. Results from a serial killing experiment suggested that assumptions made in the algebraic method were invalid.
