Reduction of the water content of Ascophyllum nodosum and the stipe of certain sublittoral seaweeds to about 50% (wet basis) is possible and economical by air‐drying on inclined grids. Removal of 40% or 60% of the water can be effected by use of centrifuges or screw expellers, but there is a simultaneous loss of a significant proportion of the soluble matter present. Plasmolysis using salt solutions is technically feasible, but is impracticable and uneconomical.
