Abstract A study of the seasonal variations in the main constituents of Ecklonia maxima, Laminaria pallida and Bifurcaria brassicaeformis , which grow in abundance round the Cape Peninsula, has been made. Distinct variations were recorded for ash, alginic acid and mannitol, whereas laminarin, combined fucose and organic nitrogen showed only small changes.
