Abstract The essential oil of Metrosideros umbellata has been fractionated in an efficient column and is shown to contain at least 12 constituents. Nine of these have been identified with known compounds, namely (+)‐α‐pinene, (‐)‐ and (±)‐β‐pinene, myrcene, (+)‐limonene and dipentene, (±)‐α‐terpineol, (+)‐myrtenyl acetate, geranyl acetate, (+)‐aromadendrene, and (+)‐cadinene. Other constituents include a terpene ester, a new sesquiterpene and a sesquiterpene alcohol.
