Previous analytical work on mushroom and other composts is briefly reviewed and the scope and aims of the present investigation are indicated. Methods of sampling and analysis of composts are described together with an estimate of sampling errors likely to be met with. Acid‐insoluble ash was used as a reference constituent and absolute changes in other constituents during the processes of composting and cropping were calculated from it.
