This paper presents the outcomes of a live consultancy project. It was conducted to align the delivery of mental health services to the population in a UK region. The two agencies involved are the Social Services Department (SSD) of the local council and the National Health Service (NHS) Mental Health Trust. The paper examines the realization of the theory of constraints as a key pragmatic model in the delivery of the issues at stake and suggests this is the necessary precursor for real synergistic working between these sets of professionals.Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
