Electronic commerce (e‐commerce) raises a number of interesting business and technical issues. This paper addresses one important combination of business and technical issues — the implications of multi‐agent systems on the supply chain. Multi‐agent systems give rise to a new approach of developing information systems where problems of various forms, ranging from complex computational tasks to a requirement of specific information, are solved by those software components best suited to do so. The operational and strategic consequences of multi‐agent systems are examined. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
