In this article, the concept of the ‘learning organization’ has been extended to the corporate board. It describes a set of diagnostic tools which are based on a 4‐year study by the IMD researchers Ada Demb and Fred Neubauer and which can be used to assess the effectiveness of a given board. As a result of these diagnoses desirable board behaviour can be reinforced and shortcomings eliminated. The article spells out practical ways to improve the performance of a board.
