This paper discusses the role of the chief executive in formulating and implementing strategy during various phases of organizational evolution. We explore the relative influence of top managers during (a) organizational founding and (b) periods of stability to set the stage for a conceptual examination of leadership and strategic change. We suggest that strategic change will be most successful when it is accompanied by change of the executive at the helm of the organization.
