Abstract Enterprise characteristics like the firm's age, nature of business activities, and location of the firm are significantly associated with the funding of women microentrepreneurs, where the role of entrepreneurial traits like age, education, and marital status turned insignificant. The microenterprises having more years into operation engaged in manufacturing and service business activities and operating from home locations have shown more inclination toward self‐raised finance to meet their business finance requirements. There was found a dire need for opening up the trading business segment away from home locations, besides explicitly professionally addressing the need for finance in microbusinesses managed by women in the rural area.
