Raman and infrared spectra of 3‐methylglutaric acid and its sodium salts in aqueous solution (H 2 O and D 2 O) were recorded from 4000 to 200 cm −1 . The analysis of the polarization of the Raman lines indicated that 3‐methylglutaric acid and its disodium salts belong to the C s group whereas the acid salt belongs to the C 1 group. On the basis of the intermolecular hydrogen bond present in the crystalline state of the acid salts, sodium 3‐methylglutarate can be classified as a type B structure whereas two polymorphic forms (A and B) of the potassium salt were identified.
