We introduce the concept of low‐resolution surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for cyanide as a potentially highly useful, cost‐effective approach to detection and analysis for monitoring water contamination. We present high‐sensitivity, low‐resolution measurements of cyanide in water using a solid‐state gold sol–gel substrate. These data suggest a sensitivity limit for low‐resolution SERS detection of cyanide in water in the region of 10 ppb. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
