In Raman scattering, photons are scattered by electrons in a molecule. Its mechanism was elucidated early after the development of quantum mechanics. If the frequencies of incident and scattered photons are denoted respectively by ν 0 and ν s , the differential scattering cross section of a Raman band is proportional to ν 0 ν s 3 . The differential scattering cross section of Rayleigh scattering is proportional to ν s 4 , as is known as the ν 4 rule. This article reconfirms these points from a tutorial viewpoint.
