As complementary to conventional techniques for inclusion characterization, Raman spectroscopy was applied to the identification of various types of non‐metallic inclusions in carbon steels. The Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that alumina, calcium aluminates, manganese sulfide, and iron sulfide were identified as the major components of non‐metallic inclusions in three low‐carbon steels investigated. Besides the Raman bands, luminescence bands of inclusions were also obtained and verified using different infrared excitation wavelengths. The facile identification of inclusions in carbon steels using Raman spectroscopy has many potential applications in studying corrosion and microstructural properties of steels related to inclusions.
