The nonlinear optical crystal strontium tartrate (SrT) was grown by the gel method. The vibrational spectra were recorded to determine the symmetries of molecular vibrations. The microhardness of the crystal was also tested. The observed, infrared (IR) bands were also assigned and discussed. The optical transmission spectral study was also carried out. The nonlinear property is confirmed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
