The Raman spectrum of the uranyl selenite mineral demesmaekerite was studied, complemented by the infrared spectrum and tentatively interpreted. The observed bands were attributed to the stretching and bending vibrations of (UO 2 ) 2+ , (SeO 3 ) 2− and OH groupings. UO bond lengths in uranyl and OH···O hydrogen bond lengths were calculated from Raman and/or infrared spectra and compared with published data. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
