Fourier transform (FT) IR and FT‐Raman spectra were recorded at room temperature for crystals of β‐alaninium perchlorate. The observed wavenumbers in both spectra reveal that the amino acid has carbonyl and protonated amino groups that reflect the cationic form of the amino acid. The presence of a carboxyl cyclic dimer structure was revealed. The symmetry of the perchlorate ion is reduced from T d to C 2 v . Consequently, the degeneracies of a few modes are lifted and these were reflected in the spectra. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
