Using NIR–FT Raman spectroscopy we have obtained useful spectra of many kinds of biomaterials. These spectra contain—with only simple sample preparation—information that can be used both for component analysis and for tissue identification. In addition, pathological changes in the spectra of eye lenses and of brain, liver and colon tissues are observed, demonstrating the usefulness of the technique as a tool of medical diagnosis.
