Optical amplification in an erbium‐doped fibre, pumped by an argon ion laser, was investigated. Spontaneous Raman frequency generation arising from an InGaAsP Fabry–Perot‐type picosecond laser signal directed into the optical waveguide and also high amplification of the Raman components in a strongly doped fibre were produced. These have not been observed previously. A great increase in the intensity of the fundamental soliton pulse when propagation in optical fibres with length of tens of centimetres was also observed.
