The Raman spectra of three LnAl 3 Cl 12 compounds (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) were studied and the observed bands are interpreted on the basis of terminal and bridging AlCl bonds and LnCl bonds. The results support the suggestion that the AlCl 4 species are of anionic type in association with cationic Ln species.
