The absolute Raman cross‐section was measured for the π u mode of supercritical carbon dioxide at 50 and 75°C over five densities. These measurements clearly show that a dimeric species is responsible for the quadrupole induced dipole (QPID) Raman spectral activity of the π u (ν 2 ) transition in carbon dioxide. This result is in accord with earlier predictions by Amos et al .
