The polarized Raman and IR spectra of Mg(NH 4 ) 2 (HPO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O and its partially deuterated polycrystalline sample were recorded and analysed. The presence of bands characteristic of HPO 2− 4 and DPO 2− 4 ions are interpreted in terms of the proton polarizabilities of the HPO 2− 4 and jDPO 2− 4 ions. The ammonium ion is free to rotate in the crystal and crystallographically distinct NH 4 + ions exist. Hydrogen bonding of different groups is also discussed.
