Information obtained from the Raman and infrared spectra of monothioformic acid, HC(O)SH, leads unambiguously to the existence of the molecule in two stable planar conformations, with the trans structure the most stable in the vapour phase. A concentration ratio of ca. 1:1 is found in the liquid. These differences between the concentration ratios in the two phases are interpreted in terms of different interaction forces operating in each phase. The interpretation of these results suggests that the carbonylsulphenyl compounds show mainly a syn conformation in the vapour phase.
