The Raman spectra (10–250 cm −1 ) of tin(II) chloride were recorded in the range 290–10 K. The low‐temperature spectra afford better resolution and vibrational modes not previously reported were observed. These include the 18 cm −1 band which exhibits an anomalous shift of 8 cm −1 to lower frequency when the crystal temperature drops from 290 to 10 K. This band is interpreted as a lattice mode arising from the vibration of the chains of pyramidal (SnCl 3 ) groups against one another.
