Raman and infrared spectra were examined for D ‐ribose, O ‐deuterated D ‐ribose, [1 – 13 C]‐D‐ribose [2‐ 13 C]‐ D ‐ribose and D ‐ribose 5‐phosphate as crystalline powders and in aqueous solution. The vibrational modes are assigned on the basis of isotopic frequency shifts, depolarization ratios and relative intensities. The data are of value in testing previous assignments, some of them being revised and discussed in terms of their use in determining the structure of the ribose residue in nucleotides.
