IR and polarized Raman spectra of a TlLa(SO 4 ) 2 · 2H 2 O crystal were recorded and analysed. The bands observed in the internal mode region of the SO   4 2−ion indicate the presence of two crystallographically distinct SO   4 2−ions in the crystal, in agreement with the x‐ray diffraction data. These SO   4 2−ions have stronger SO bonds than a free SO 4 ion. The water molecule forms hydrogen bonds of medium strength.
