Abstract Raman spectral data are presented for the sesquioxide and the trihalides (F, Cl, Br and I) of promethium. The Raman spectra of these lanthanide compounds are reported for the first time and are compared with those of the homologous lanthanide compounds. Tentative symmetry assignments have been made for the observed Raman‐active bands based on factor group analysis of their respective crystal structures and comparisons with the assigned Raman spectra of other lanthanide compounds. The characteristic band patterns of the Raman phonon spectra have been found to be very useful in determining the crystal structure of the respective promethium compounds.
