Electronic, infrared and resonance Raman spectra of the two crystalline polymorphic forms of 1, 4‐dihydroxyanthraquinone are reported. The differences in the spectral properties are explained on the basis of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds in one form compared with intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the other form. The intermolecular interaction leads to exciton splitting and strong hypochromic effects in the resonance Raman spectrum. The optical properties of the intramolecular hydrogen bonded form resemble that of the anthracycline drug adriamycin and serves as a useful model.
