The Raman and infrared spectra of glutaric acid, (CH 2 ) 3 [COOH(D)] 2 , and its potassium salts, CH 2 ) 3 (COO 2 KHD and CH 2 3 COO 2 K 2 , in aqueous solution have been investigated in the range 3500–200 cm −1 . The analysis of the polarization ratio of the Raman lines indicated that glutaric acid belongs to point group C 1 whereas its ions belong to point group C s . An assignment of the fundamental vibrations is proposed.
