High–quality Raman spectra of orthorhombic sulfur (S 8 ) have been recorded at 40 K employing multiscanning conditions. Assignments are proposed for the many new features detected, especially binary and ternary overtones and combinations of the SS stretching and SSS bending vibrations. The anharmonicities of these particular modes are shown to be fairly small.
