The temperature dependence of internal NO 2 modes has been investigated by polarized Raman scattering from potassium barium nitrite single crystals. The frequencies of the symmetric stretching and bending modes are determined for the three non‐equivalent NO 2 sites present at room temperature. The structural implications associated with the phase transition at about 200 K are derived from line splittings and relative intensities. The experimental results are consistent with an order–disorder transition and no soft lattice mode has been found.
