Abstract The region of OH and OD stretching vibrations in the Raman spectrum of liquid H 2 O and D 2 O was investigated by analysing the isotropic and anisotropic components of the bands. The constants for inter‐ and intra‐molecular and Fermi coupling were estimated and the positions of all components calculated. The intermolecular coupling appears to be stronger than intramolecular coupling in liquid water.
