Polaritons in complex bulk media

Theory and experiment for phonon‐like polaritons in complicated bulk media are discussed. The media include crystals with diffusion, such as ionic conductors, in which the theoretical approaches of Merten and Borstel, Nakamura and Barker and London are compared; systems having polariton anomalies in the frequency region in which the two‐phonon density of states peaks, such as ammonium chloride and calcite; and lithium niobate with optical damage.
