Raman spectra of Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O single crystals have been recorded in the region 4000–20 cm −1 using an Ar + laser as a source of excitation. The polarization behaviour of the Raman lines under different crystal orientations is reported. It is shown that the water molecules lie almost in a plane perpendicular to the crystal c ‐axis.
