Raman spectra of polycrystalline films of CFBr 3 have been recorded at 77 K. A spectrum of the liquid at room temperature has also been recorded and depolarization ratios of the fundamentals measured. Splittings have been observed for all fundamentals and the external mode region contains at least five bands. An orthorhombic crystal structure together with LO‐TO components of the degenerate CBr 3 stretching mode ν 4 are suggested to account for the observed splittings.
