The model compound data of Siamwiza et al. on the Fermi resonance doublet of various para ‐substituted benzenes is analysed theoretically to obtain the uncoupled frequencies and intensities of the ring breathing mode and the first overtone of the out‐of‐plane bending mode. The possibility of obtaining accurate information on the state of ionization of tyrosine hydroxyl groups in proteins from an analysis of the experimentally observed peak frequencies and intensities is discussed.
