Symmetry arguments including time reversal show that the polar, degenerate optical zone center phonons exhibit a dispersion linear in wave‐vector provided the crystal does not possess improper symmetry operations. After reviewing the theory, we present experimental results on the Raman spectra of α‐quartz and bismuth germanium oxide which illustrate this effect.
