Raman spectra of solid 2,4,6‐trichlorophenol and 2,4,6‐tribromophenol ( s ‐TCP and s ‐TBP) have been recorded at 80 and 300 K. Infrared spectra in the region 4000–200 cm −1 have also been recorded of the solids and of dilute solutions in CCl 4 . Vibrational assignments and qualitative descriptions of the normal modes of these compounds are proposed on the basis of substituted benzene molecules with C s symmetry. Some evidence for intermolecular hydrogen bonding has been found in the solid state infrared spectra of both compounds, but they do not appear to self‐associate in CCl 4 solution.
