Infrared and Raman spectra were obtained for meso ‐ 1, 2, 3, 4‐tetrabromobutane and meso ‐1, 2, 3, 4‐tetrachlorobutane. The spectra of both compounds were interpreted in terms of a centrosymmetrical conformation that has all carbons and primary halogens coplanar, with the secondary halogens being on opposite sides of that plane. Additional conformations are present in solution. Vibrational assignments are proposed, based on approximate normal coordinate calculations.
