Solutions of various concentrations of tetramethylammonium chloride and trimethylammonium chloride in liquid hydrogen chloride have been examined by Raman spectroscopy and the solvation number of Cl − anions in these solutions determined. It was found for solutions up to 3 mol I −1 of (CH 3 ) 4 N + Cl − in liquid HCl, that the Cl − anions are solvated by six HCl molecules, while trimethylammonium chloride exists in the form of ion pairs solvated by five HCl molecules, (CH 3 ) 3 N + H ⃛Cl − , 5HCl.
