Resonance Raman spectra of nine sulfophthalein dyes have been measured in aqueous solutions at various pH values between 4.0 and 11.0. Raman band assignments have been carried out by referring to the spectra of related compounds and the band shifts of Phenol Red on deuteration of the two phenol rings. The phenolsulfophthalein dyes have been ascertained to exist as a pure quinoid form in the weakly acidic solution, while in the alkaline solution they exist as a resonance hybrid of the quinoid and phenolate structures.
