Raman spectra of crystalline, molten and gaseous ZrCl 4 have been measured. The Raman frequencies of the solid have been assigned on the basis of the recently determined crystal structure. In molten ZrCl 4 polymeric units with similar structural elements as in the solid and also ZrCl 4 molecules will be formed. ZrCl 4 molecules are present in the gaseous state.
