Acid and basic solutions of 15 N and D substituted guanines have been investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Monoanion and dianion formation have been followed by spectra changes; N 7 , N 9 H tautomery has also been studied by comparing with methylated derivatives. Assignment of the band frequencies have also been proposed. Analysing 15 N results have permitted precise comparisons between the neutral form spectra and the anionic or cationic form spectra. Abbreviations used: IUPAC‐IUB abbreviations are used throughout: m 7 −Gua or m 7 ‐guanine: 7‐methyl‐guanine, etc.
