The single crystal Raman spectra and powder infrared spectra have been determined for the isomorphous Tuttons salts K 2 Cu(H 2 O) 6 (SO 4 ) 2 , K 2 Cu(H 2 O) 6 (SeO 4 ) 2 , K 2 Zn(H 2 O) 6 (SO 4 ) 2 and K 2 Zn(H 2 O) 6 (SeO 4 ) 2 . The symmetry distortion of the XO 4 2‐ions caused by unsymmetric hydrogen bonding produces both site and factor group splitting. All vibrations of the bound water are observed except those related to the water bending mode at 1600 cm −1 . The libration modes show dependence on the MO bond distances and also the hydrogen bonding to the XO 4 2‐species.
