The Raman spectra of POCl 3 , HCONMe 2 , PhCONMe 2 and reaction mixtures of POCl 3 and HCONMe 2 , and POCl 3 and PhCONMe 2 have been recorded in an attempt to establish the nature of the reaction products. Assignments for most of the bands observed in the spectra of the reaction product are given. The spectra were compared with the spectra of the products of the reaction between HCONMe 2 and SOCl 2 . Several arguments could be advanced which indicated that the only product (RP 1 ) formed in the reaction of POCl 3 with HCONMe 2 was \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm HCOPOCl}_{\rm 2} \mathop {\rm N}\limits^{\rm + } {\rm Me}_{\rm 2} {\rm Cl}^ - $\end{document} rather than \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm HCCI}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^{\rm + } {\rm Me}_2 {\rm OPOCl}_2^ - $\end{document} . The observed accidental degeneracy of the amide I band at 1668 cm −1 in RP 1 and the imine band at 1665 cm −1 in \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm HCCI}_{\rm 2} \mathop {\rm N}\limits^{\rm + } {\rm Me}_{\rm 2} {\rm Cl}^ - $\end{document} showed that the usefulness of the amide I and imine bands as characteristic bands is restricted.
