The general valence force field has been employed to evaluate force constants for some square‐planar type anions e.g. XY 4 n−(X = Pd, Pt or Au; Y = Cl or Br; n = 1 or 2) and ICl 4 − . Bond polarizability derivatives, from Lippincott and Nagarajan, and Long and Plane, have been evaluated and compared with the experimental results. Theoretically determined bond orders have also been compared with experimentally estimated values.
