The five external vibrational modes of h4‐urea and of d4‐urea active in Raman scattering have been measured at room temperature and at 100K. It is shown that the A 1 mode has a frequency close to 100 cm −1 at room temperature. It has been possible to interpret the angular dispersion of one of the external polar modes by the dynamical matrix, which has also enabled us to calculate the permanent dipole moment of the molecule of urea. The value obtained, ∼ 3 Debyes at room temperature for h4‐urea and d4‐urea, is accounted for by the hypothesis of ionized hydrogen bonds.
